This week has been so exciting! We have been busy. This week in reading we have started our novels, Call it Courage and The Cay. On Wednesday was Spirit Day, so the whole school was wearing red! Also on Wednesday, we met our book buddies for the first time! We went to the big church with them and had our regular chapel routine. Today we figured out that the "Who's in the Spotlight" was Lily Simpson. We also have a "Where in the World" board and that country was... Kazakhstan! In other news, on Tuesday Hillary Morris, Caleb Solomon, Shianne Chapman, and Stellan Heazlett had an "Out of This World Delicious" bake sale. They were selling cookie bars. On Friday, Macy Campbell, Laura Kim, Connor Schrott, and Alex Pavlov were selling brownies. Their theme was jungle.

This week is the 3rd week of school, and it's awesome! In music, we are learning new songs and the ukelele. We performed for the school during sing day. In P.E., we are playing soccer. In science we are doing an experiment on pendulums. In reading, we are learning about close reading. We are also pretending we are trapped somewhere and only have certain materials. To add to the excitement, we also had Pizza Friday start this week.

In Ms. Grubb's math class we are working on place value, decimals, and exponents.
We are having a fun time in the first week of math! We are also working on our
grammar books. Oh I forgot one of the best parts of fifth grade: the lemonade war
project. We get to make different sweet treats like cookie bars, rice krispy treats,
and brownies. They are only 50 cents a piece. We have been making project posters. In Ms. Green's class 4th and 5th are working on different soccer drills. In Spanish we are doing famous people projects. In music we have been learning the ukulele and new songs.

The first week of school was such a whirlwind! It was wonderful seeing everyone's smiling faces on Tuesday at Visit Day. I saw a few misty eyes mixed in there, too, as parents realized this was their child's last Visit Day. On Wednesday, we got straight to work. Our first activity was a little challenging for some. The kids were in groups of 4 and they had to save Fred (a gummy worm) whose boat (a plastic cup) had flipped over. Unfortunately for Fred, his lifejacket (a gummy lifesaver) was stuck under the boat. The task was to flip back over the boat and get Fred into his life jacket and into the boat. However, the kids were not allowed to touch any of these items. The only thing they were given was a paper clip. Two groups successfully saved Fred! Check out some the pictures below of us saving Fred.

Our next challenge was to use a rubber band that had four strings attached to it, to move cups into a certain formation. All groups were successful in this challenge and had a blast!

We learned a lot about team work and synergizing with these challenges! Synergizing is one of our 7 Habits that we have learned about this year. The seven habits are rules to live by that foster independence and overall well being. They are
1) Be Proactive: I'm in charge of me
2) Begin with the end in mind: Set goals and make a plan
3) Put first things, first: Work, then play
4) Think win-win: Compromise
5) Seek first to understand, then to be understood
6) Synergize: Together is better
7) Sharpen the saw: Balance in life feels best.
We have been discussing what these 7 habits mean and applying them to our daily life.

Welcome!

Check out all the exciting events happening in Ms. Grubb's fifth grade! Each Friday, we'll update our blog with what happened during the week and what we're looking forward to in the coming week. We'll post any pictures or videos that we make as well. Thanks for taking the time to read about our day!
